Statement from the President of Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that Russian leader Vladimir Putin uses the topic of negotiations with Ukraine to avoid new sanctions. In an interview with the German tabloid Bild, Zelensky emphasized that it is important for Moscow to demonstrate to U.S. President Donald Trump that there is a diplomatic bridge between Ukraine and Russia.
The Purpose of Negotiations
Zelensky explained that Putin aims to create the illusion of dialogue to avoid sanctions, stating: "We are negotiating. If sanctions are imposed, negotiations will end."
Additionally, he added that Russia seeks to isolate Ukraine by conducting dialogue without the involvement of Europeans and Americans.
The Importance of Sanctions
Zelensky stressed that the delay in imposing sanctions has allowed Putin to adapt to economic difficulties. He believes that sanctions need to be implemented urgently, as "people are not logs to be thrown into the fire."
Prospects for Ending the War
Zelensky expressed hope that the U.S. understands that Putin only responds to strength and called for decisive actions. He emphasized that increased support for Ukraine would help save lives.
