Record in 400m Individual Medley
18-year-old swimmer Summer McIntosh from Canada set her third world record in five days, completing the 400 meters individual medley in 4:23.65 during the Canadian trials in Victoria. This record surpasses her previous achievement of 4:24.38, which was set earlier this year.
Historic Achievement
McIntosh became the first female swimmer to set world records in three different events in a single long course since Michael Phelps competed at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
She also previously set world records in the 400m freestyle and 200m individual medley. Additionally, her times in the 800m freestyle and 200m butterfly rank as the third and second best times in history, respectively.
Preparing for the World Championships
Summer, who won three gold medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, is preparing for the World Championships taking place in Singapore next month. She plans to compete in five individual events: 200m and 400m individual medley, 200m butterfly, 400m freestyle, and one of the distances 800m freestyle, 200m freestyle, or 200m backstroke.
Athlete's Comments
After her latest record, McIntosh noted that she felt a special energy during the competition. "World records are meant to be broken. I want my record to be as fast as possible by the time I leave this sport," she said.
The next competition will take place on June 12, where Summer will participate in the 200m freestyle.
