The Number of People Forced to Leave Their Homes is Growing in Ukraine and Worldwide
- The number of forcibly displaced persons worldwide has exceeded 122 million, increasing compared to last year.
- The main reasons for the increase are conflicts in Sudan, Ukraine, and other regions.
- Funding for humanitarian aid has decreased to levels seen in 2015, threatening the lives of millions.
This is reported by Associated Press, Al Jazeera, Asharq Al-Awsat.
According to a new report from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the number of people forced to leave their homes due to violence and persecution has surpassed 122 million. This is 2 million more than last year and nearly double the figures from ten years ago.
The report notes that by April 2025, 73.5 million people remained internally displaced within their countries, an increase of over 6 million compared to 2023. The primary reasons for this increase are prolonged conflicts in Sudan, Ukraine, and other countries.
Filippo Grandi, the head of UNHCR, stated that despite the rising number of refugees, some positive changes have been noted in the last six months, such as the return of about 2 million Syrians to their homes. However, the situation in the country remains complex, and people need assistance.
The report also mentions a rise in the number of displaced persons in Haiti, Yemen, and other regions. More than a third of all forcibly displaced persons worldwide are citizens of Sudan (14.3 million), Syria (13.5 million), Afghanistan (10.3 million), or Ukraine (8.8 million).
Additionally, the number of asylum seekers awaiting decisions on their cases has increased, now totaling 8.4 million, which is a 22% rise compared to last year.
Funding for refugee assistance has decreased to levels seen in 2015, putting the lives of millions at risk. Organizations providing humanitarian aid are facing a lack of political leadership in conflict resolution, complicating their work.
