Trump stated that his actions are aimed at saving the U.S. automotive industry from "destruction" and stopping the so-called "California mandate" on electric vehicles. With his decision, 17 states representing 30% of the U.S. automotive market will no longer be able to implement California's standards requiring the sale of electric vehicles by 2035.

California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his intention to file a lawsuit against this decision, calling it "illegal." According to Newsom, Trump is acting in favor of major polluters and jeopardizing U.S. competitiveness in the global electric vehicle market.
