On June 12, 2025, Anze Kopitar, a player for the Los Angeles Kings, won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for the third time. This award is given to the player who demonstrates the best qualities of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct on the ice.
Kopitar learned of his victory while on a family vacation in Slovenia, playing golf with his father. His children, Neza and Jakub, informed him about the award.
In the regular season of 2024-25, Kopitar played 81 games, receiving only two minor penalties totaling four minutes. He scored 67 points (21 goals, 46 assists) and added another nine points in six playoff games.
This trophy marks his third win, having previously received it in the 2015-16 and 2022-23 seasons, making him the tenth player in NHL history to win this award three times.
Kopitar's Performances and Achievements
As the team's captain, Kopitar emphasized that this award symbolizes gentlemanliness for him. "Hockey is a physical sport, but within those parameters, there is room for courtesy and respect towards opponents and referees," he stated.
Kopitar is also a two-time Stanley Cup champion and has two Selke Trophies (2015-16, 2017-18) and the Mark Messier Leadership Award (2021-22).
In the voting for the Lady Byng Trophy, he received 856 points, surpassing Brayden Point from Tampa (793 points) and Jack Eichel from Vegas (782 points).
Kopitar was selected in the 2005 NHL Draft as the 11th overall pick.
