Winners of the Women’s Prize 2025
On June 12, 2025, in London, the winners of the Women’s Prize were announced. Dutch author Yael van der Wouden received the Women’s Prize for Fiction for her debut novel "The Safekeep." The book addresses themes of repressed emotions and historical memory in the Netherlands after World War II.
British doctor Rachel Clarke won the Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction for her book "The Story of a Heart," which explores the human drama associated with organ transplantation.
Both prizes have a cash award of £30,000 (approximately $41,000) and are open to women writers in English from around the world.
Details about the Books
"The Safekeep" is a family saga set in the Netherlands in 1961. Critics have described this debut as "impressive," highlighting the depth of the characters and the tension of the plot. The chief judge of the prize, writer Kate de Waal, described the book as "a masterful blend of history, tension, and historical authenticity."
In "The Story of a Heart," Rachel Clarke tells the story of two children connected by heart transplantation, emphasizing the human aspect of medical procedures. The judge for the non-fiction category, journalist Kavita Puri, characterized this book as "authoritative, beautiful, and compassionate."
Special Awards
At the ceremony, a special award was also presented for outstanding contribution, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Women’s Prize, to author Bernardine Evaristo. Evaristo received £100,000 for her "transformative impact on literature."
The Women’s Prize, founded in 1996, aims to support women writers and address the imbalance in publishing. In 2022, only 26.5% of non-fiction books reviewed in British newspapers were written by women.
