Challenges for Rory McIlroy at the US Open
Rory McIlroy faced significant challenges during the opening of the 2025 US Open at Oakmont. After winning the Masters in April, his attempts to regain form led to a disappointing start.
McIlroy finished the first round with a score of 74, which is four strokes over par, marking a significant blow to his chances of winning the third major of the year. He started the game with two birdies, but his score sharply deteriorated after he played the first nine holes in 41 strokes.
At the same time, his playing partners, Justin Rose and Shane Lowry, also struggled, finishing the round with scores of 77 and 79, respectively.
McIlroy's Technical Issues
McIlroy began his round on the back nine but encountered difficulties with shot accuracy at the start of the second round. After he received a double bogey on the 8th hole, his performance began to decline.
Overall, only five players from the morning wave finished the round below par. Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau finished with a score of 73, which is three over par.
In analyzing the situation, experts highlighted that McIlroy had issues with shot accuracy, and his iron play was below average. This was a primary reason for his poor performance at the US Open.
After completing the round, McIlroy chose not to speak with the press, as he needed to improve his game to have a chance of making the cut for the weekend. According to US Open history, only three of the last 26 champions were not within four strokes of the leader after the first round.
