Officers Sue for Memorial

Two police officers who defended the Capitol building during the attack by Donald Trump supporters on January 6, 2021, have filed a lawsuit against Congress, demanding the establishment of a memorial in honor of law enforcement officers who were harmed during the attack.

In 2022, Congress passed a law to install a memorial plaque with the names of the officers who confronted the mob; however, the memorial has yet to be established. This requires guidance from House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Officers Daniel Hodges from the D.C. Metropolitan Police and Harry Dunn from the former Capitol Police argue that their lawsuit aims to compel Congress to adhere to its own law and honor the memory of those who defended the building.

Following the attack, over 100 police officers were injured, and many of the offenders were convicted of crimes related to the January 6 events. President Trump later pardoned some of them.

The lawsuit states that the failure to establish the memorial reflects attempts by Trump and his allies to rewrite the history of that day’s events. Speaker Johnson, in turn, noted that the issue is not a priority.

Officers Hodges and Dunn expressed their frustration during a press conference that they had to go to court to enforce the law. They hope that their lawsuit will draw attention to the importance of honoring those who defended democracy.
