EU to Appoint Special Envoy for Ukrainians

Appointment of a Special Envoy
The European Union is preparing to create a new position of special envoy for Ukrainians living in EU countries. According to information published by Politico, the candidate for this position is Ylva Johansson, who previously served as the European Commissioner for Home Affairs from 2019 to 2024.
Responsibilities of the New Envoy
The main tasks of the special envoy will be to strengthen coordination, represent the interests of Ukrainians, and implement practical support tools for them within the EU. Johansson has previously visited Ukraine, including refugees in camps at the Romanian border, and was awarded the Order of Merit II degree in 2022.
Temporary Protection for Ukrainians
Millions of citizens in Ukraine currently hold temporary protection status in the EU, which is valid until March 2026. The European Commission also plans to extend this status until March 2027 and develop recommendations for member states regarding further measures, including the possibility of providing a new legal status for Ukrainians who work or study in the EU.
Number of Ukrainians in the EU
According to the European Commission, as of January 2025, there are approximately 4.3 million individuals in the EU receiving temporary protection. This number is expected to decrease to 4.1 million by the end of 2025 and to 3.8 million by the end of 2026.
