Cuts to Foreign Aid and Public Broadcasting
On Thursday, June 12, 2025, Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives voted in favor of President Donald Trump's proposal to cancel $9.4 billion in previously approved funding. This package of cuts includes the removal of $8.3 billion from the foreign aid budget and $1.1 billion for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which provides funding for NPR and PBS.
This initiative is part of the White House's efforts to codify cuts proposed by the "Department of Government Efficiency," led by tech billionaire Elon Musk. Trump urged Republicans to support the bill, stating that it is "absurd" not to vote for it.
The vote concluded with a result of 214 to 212, with four Republicans voting with 208 Democrats against the proposal. The cuts package now moves to the Senate, where a 60-vote threshold is not necessary for its passage.
Opposition and Concerns
Some Republicans, such as Senator Susan Collins, expressed concerns about the cuts to the PEPFAR program, which fights HIV/AIDS. Senator Lisa Murkowski also opposed the cuts to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, noting that many communities in Alaska rely on this funding for essential needs.
Overall, the $9.4 billion cuts are minor compared to the $2.4 trillion in new deficits that may arise from other legislative initiatives by Trump. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called the cuts package "reckless" and stated that it threatens national security.
