Details of the Shark Attack

9-year-old Leah Lendl was attacked by a shark while snorkeling near Boca Grande, Florida, suffering serious injuries. The incident occurred on June 12, 2025, when Leah dove underwater and, upon surfacing, began to scream.

Her mother, Nadia Lendl, was only 4 feet away with two younger children. She saw that Leah's right arm was bleeding and mostly severed. At that moment, Nadia started calling for help, trying to reach the shore with the children, while her husband, who was also snorkeling, swam towards them.

Help on the Shore

When Leah reached the shore, builders working nearby helped the family. They called for an ambulance and used towels to stop the bleeding, creating a makeshift bandage.

One of the builders, Alfonso Tello, noted that the shark that attacked Leah was about 8 feet long. After medical personnel arrived, Leah was evacuated to a hospital in Tampa.

Treatment and Recovery

At the hospital, Leah underwent a lengthy surgery that lasted about six hours. Doctors were able to reconnect her arm, but Leah's condition remained uncertain the following day.

Her uncle, Max Derinsky, created a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for medical expenses, noting that the girl would remain in the hospital for some time and would need physical therapy to regain function in her arm.
