Mel Brooks Returns in the Sequel to Spaceballs

  • Mel Brooks will reprise his role as Yogurt in the sequel, scheduled for release in 2027.
  • The sequel will be produced by Amazon-MGM with Josh Gad as co-writer.
  • The original film gained cult status despite mixed reviews upon its release.

This was reported by The Independent, The Guardian.

New Details on the Spaceballs Sequel

Mel Brooks has confirmed that he will return to the role of Yogurt in the sequel to Spaceballs, which is set to be released in 2027. Brooks, who will soon turn 99, is the co-writer, director, and actor of the original 1987 version that parodies the Star Wars franchise.

In his social media post, Brooks wrote: "I told you we would be back." The development of the sequel was announced last year, and it will be produced by Amazon-MGM, with Josh Gad as co-writer and possibly an actor as well.

Gad shared that Spaceballs inspired him during his childhood, and he is now looking forward to working with Brooks and other talented individuals on the film's continuation. The sequel will be directed by Josh Greenbaum, known for the comedy Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.

The original film received mixed reviews upon its release but gained cult status over time. Reports suggest that Rick Moranis and Bill Pullman may return for the sequel, alongside Keke Palmer, who recently found success in the film One of Them Days.

In 2014, Brooks stated that he would not make a sequel without Moranis. In a press release from Amazon-MGM, it was noted that the title, plot, and other casting details remain under wraps, but the film is described as "A Prehistoric Reboot Sequel Part Two" with elements of a reboot.

Brooks, who is one of 21 individuals to achieve EGOT status (winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony), last appeared on the big screen in 2005 in the film The Producers. Spaceballs 2 is planned for theatrical release in 2027.
