Introducing the 'Trojan Horse' Therapy for Treating Myeloma

  • The new 'Trojan Horse' therapy utilizes belantamab mafodotin for the treatment of myeloma.
  • The procedure is administered once every three weeks and aims to destroy cancer cells.
  • The therapy can significantly improve the quality of life for patients, but it also has side effects.

This is reported by The Independent, BBC.

In the United Kingdom, a new therapy for treating blood cancer, named 'Trojan Horse', is being introduced for the first time in the world. This targeted therapy, known as belantamab mafodotin (Blenrep), has been approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for use in the National Health Service (NHS).

Blenrep has shown promising results in slowing the progression of myeloma, allowing patients to receive treatment for up to three times longer than traditional methods. About 1,500 patients annually with multiple myeloma, an incurable bone marrow cancer, could benefit from this innovation.

This therapy is administered once every three weeks via infusions and targets cancer cells by penetrating them and releasing toxic molecules that destroy the cells from within. Treatment will be available for patients whose disease is progressing or who do not respond to previous treatment methods.

Professor Peter Johnson, the national clinical director for cancer at NHS, noted that this therapy could significantly change patients' lives by giving them more time to spend with loved ones. A patient named Paul Silvester, 60, from Sheffield, has already benefited from the treatment under an early access program. He reported that after receiving the first dose, he achieved remission in just a few weeks.

However, despite the promising results, the therapy may have side effects such as dry eyes and blurred vision. This is due to chemotherapy residues that can enter the body after the cancer cells are destroyed.

A team of developers from GSK in the UK has been working on this technology, which promises to be a significant step in cancer treatment. Health Minister Karin Smith emphasized that this therapy positions the NHS at the forefront of innovation in the fight against cancer.
