Immigrant from Wisconsin Released on Bail After False Accusation

  • Ramón Morales Reyes has been released from jail after being falsely accused of threatening to kill the president.
  • Wisconsin authorities determined that he was a victim of fraud involving a forged letter.
  • Morales Reyes plans to fight against deportation and is a witness in a criminal case.

This was reported by Associated Press, The Independent.

Release of Ramón Morales Reyes

54-year-old Ramón Morales Reyes, who was falsely accused of threatening to kill President Donald Trump, was released on bail from a Wisconsin jail on Thursday. This occurred three weeks after being arrested by federal immigration agents.

The accusation of threatening Trump arose after a social media post from Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, which included a photo of Morales Reyes and an excerpt from a letter that he allegedly wrote in English. However, Wisconsin authorities determined that Reyes, who does not speak English, had been a victim of fraud.

Morales Reyes himself was a victim of violence in 2023 when his bicycle was stolen. According to law enforcement, the suspect in the crime Demetrik D. Scott forged a letter in an attempt to evade responsibility. Morales Reyes was set to be a witness in Scott's case, which is scheduled for July.

He was released after posting a $7,500 bail set by an immigration judge. Morales Reyes stated that he plans to fight against deportation alongside his attorney.

Judge Carla Espinosa stated during a hearing in immigration court in Chicago that Morales Reyes is not a threat to the community.

Morales Reyes, a married father of three U.S. citizen children, works as a dishwasher in Milwaukee. He immigrated from Mexico in the 1980s and does not have legal status in the U.S. This year, he applied for a U visa, which is designated for victims of serious crimes. Obtaining such a visa can take years.

Although the Department of Homeland Security announced that Morales Reyes is no longer considered a threat to Trump, federal attorneys will continue immigration proceedings, accusing him of multiple illegal entries into the U.S.

Morales Reyes was held at the Dodge County Detention Center in Juneau, approximately 70 miles north of Milwaukee, and was released after the federal government did not contest the bail determination. Noem's post, in which she accused Morales Reyes of attempted murder, remains online.
