This was reported by The Guardian, CNN.
In the final debates before the New York mayoral primary elections scheduled for June 24, Democratic candidate Zokhran Mamdani and former Governor Andrew Cuomo fiercely competed in their arguments. The debates took place just before the start of early voting.
Cuomo, who is leading the race, criticized Mamdani's experience, claiming that the 33-year-old candidate is insufficiently prepared for the responsibilities of mayor and labeled his candidacy as "dangerous." Mamdani, in turn, reminded the audience of the numerous scandals associated with Cuomo, including allegations of sexual harassment that led to his resignation in 2021.
Mamdani also accused Cuomo of manipulating his image in campaign materials, viewing this as a manifestation of Islamophobia. He suggested that this reflects Cuomo and his financial backers' fear of losing the election.
The debates attracted significant attention as New York is the largest city in the U.S., and the mayoral election could serve as an important test for the future of the Democratic Party. Mamdani, who immigrated from Uganda at the age of seven, has the support of progressive politicians such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Public safety issues were also discussed during the debates. Cuomo emphasized the need for increased police funding, while Mamdani advocated for the involvement of social workers to improve the situation in the city. Other candidates also participated in the debates, aiming to present alternatives to Cuomo and Mamdani, as the New York primary elections typically determine the final candidate for the general elections.
