The CVS Investigation in Louisiana
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrell has announced an investigation concerning CVS. She is examining whether the company violated regulations by using customers' personal information to send text messages that lobbied against a proposed law.
The Content of CVS Messages
The messages received by many residents of Louisiana warned of the potential closure of CVS pharmacies due to the new bill. One of the texts stated that "recent legislative changes threaten to close your CVS pharmacy — the cost of medications may rise, and your pharmacist may lose their job."
Details of the Bill
The bill under discussion would prohibit companies from simultaneously owning both pharmacy managers and retail pharmacies. CVS owns a network of pharmacies and is the owner of CVS Caremark, one of the largest pharmacy managers in the U.S.
Statements from Officials
Representative Dixon McMakin noted that some of the messages were false and misleading. He emphasized that advertisements on social media claimed that legislators could close all CVS pharmacies in the state.
CVS spokesperson Amy Thibault stated that the text messages were sent in response to the latest amendment to the bill, which was passed without public discussion. She noted that the company has a responsibility to inform its customers about legislation that they believe is erroneous.
Next Steps
The Attorney General plans to send CVS a letter demanding the cessation of the messages. Support for the bill in the House was significant; however, it was not passed by the Senate, and a campaign to revive the legislation may be initiated.
Republican Governor Jeff Landry plans to convene a special session to address similar issues in the future.
