Elimination of the Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps
As a result of Israeli airstrikes that occurred on Friday night, the commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, General Hossein Salami, was eliminated. This was reported by several Iranian state media outlets, including CNN.
General Salami had headed this secret military unit since 2019 and reported directly to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He led the Corps during Iran's launch of hundreds of drones and missiles at Israel in April and October of last year, which were the first direct strikes from Iran on Israeli territory.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is involved in the development of ballistic missiles, suppressing dissent within the country, and military operations in the Middle East. This entity is not only the most powerful military institution in Iran but also has significant influence over the country's domestic politics and economy, covering sectors such as construction, telecommunications, automotive, and energy.
Earlier, in the early hours of Friday, Israel announced a preemptive strike against Iran, warning of a potential missile attack from the Iranian side in response. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the attack on Iran would continue "for as many days as necessary" to eliminate this threat, naming the operation "Rising Lion."
