Club Owner Arrested After Tragedy
The owner of the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo was arrested on June 13, 2025, following a roof collapse that claimed the lives of 236 people. Alongside him, his sister Maribel Espaillat was also detained.
According to the prosecution, neither has been officially charged yet, but they have 48 hours to file charges. Prosecutors stated that "both suspects displayed tremendous irresponsibility and negligence by failing to prevent the collapse."
Espaillat's lawyer, Miguel Valerio, stated that he expects access to the prosecution's evidence in the coming days. He emphasized that this is a case of "involuntary manslaughter."
Details of the Tragedy
The collapse occurred on April 8 during an event attended by officials, musicians, and former Major League Baseball players. After the collapse, rescuers worked continuously for 53 hours, saving 189 people.
Among the deceased were renowned singer Rubby Pérez, the governor of Monte Cristi province Nelsy Cruz, and former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel. The tragedy affected not only famous personalities but also ordinary citizens.
Next Steps
A government commission, which includes international experts, continues to investigate the causes of the collapse. Relatives of some survivors have already filed lawsuits against Antonio Espaillat.
The Jet Set club, which had been in operation for nearly half a century, was famous for its merengue parties that attracted international stars and high-profile Dominicans.
