Ukrainian Fighter Jet Strike Destroys Russian Positions in Zaporizhzhia

  • A successful strike by a Ukrainian MiG-29 fighter jet destroyed key Russian military facilities in Zaporizhzhia.
  • The Air Forces are actively using the MiG-29 to combat Russian drones and other targets.
  • Poland is considering the possibility of transferring MiG-29 fighter jets, which are being phased out, to Ukraine.

This was reported by Ukrayinska Pravda and RBC Ukraine.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine reported a new powerful strike carried out by Ukrainian combat aviation against enemy positions in the Zaporizhzhia sector. The MiG-29 fighter jet executed a precision strike using guided bombs, resulting in the destruction of a command post for Russian drone operators, an ammunition depot, and a fuel and lubricants storage facility.

A video of the successful combat operation was published on the Air Forces' channel on Telegram. The description of the video states: "Thank you to our partners for the precise and effective 'arguments.'"

What Other Targets Are Being Destroyed by Ukrainian MiG-29s

The multifunctional MiG-29 fighter jets are used not only for frontline missions. The Air Forces periodically report operations against Russian strike drones during attacks on Ukraine.

For example, last month, a night combat mission was demonstrated by a pilot with the call sign Yellow Tail, whose MiG-29 destroyed a strike drone while repelling a massive attack on Ukrainian infrastructure.

Recently, drone forces detected a concentration of Russian troops unloading ammunition and relayed the coordinates to combat aviation. As a result, the MiG-29 crew executed a precise strike with an AASM Hammer guided bomb, destroying an ammunition depot and enemy personnel.

Before the full-scale invasion of Russia, Ukraine had several dozen MiG-29 fighter jets at its disposal. A number of units have been lost over the past three years, but the exact number remains unknown.

Poland has long been considered a potential donor of this type of aircraft. It is known to have transferred some planes for spare parts. In the fall of 2024, the Ukrainian side repeatedly called on partners to transfer MiG-29s that are being phased out of the Polish armed forces.

In the spring of 2025, then-President Andrzej Duda noted that he could consider a possible transfer if Warsaw receives adequate replacements from its allies. In May, Polish Ambassador Piotr Łukasiewicz stated that negotiations are still ongoing.
