Kenyan Police Officer Arrested Over Blogger's Death in Custody

  • A police officer has been arrested in connection with the death of a blogger, confirmed by an autopsy to be the result of an assault.
  • Mass protests are demanding the resignation of the Deputy Inspector of Police.
  • The President has called for a swift investigation and protection of citizens' rights.

This has been reported by BBC, The Guardian.

In Kenya, a police officer has been arrested in connection with the death of blogger Albert Ojwang in police custody, which has sparked mass protests in the capital, Nairobi.

Ojwang, 31, died in a police station following his arrest related to his critical post about Deputy Inspector of Police Eliud Lagat. Initially, the police claimed he died from self-harm, but an independent autopsy refuted this version, confirming that it was likely due to an assault.

Following Ojwang's death, in which other police officers are suspected, protests began demanding Lagat's resignation. President William Ruto has called for a swift investigation and promised to protect citizens from police misconduct.

It is noteworthy that in the past four months, 20 people have died in police custody, highlighting alarming allegations of police brutality in the country.

After the initial hearing, Officer James Mukwana will remain in custody pending a review of his case in a week. He is also accused of attempting to conceal evidence, including tampering with surveillance cameras.

The investigation continues as the community demands justice in Ojwang's case and improvements in the political situation in the country.
