On June 13, 2025, Israel carried out its largest military operation against Iran in decades, named Operation "Eastern Lion." As part of this operation, the Israeli Air Force struck numerous sites in Iran, including nuclear facilities, ballistic missile production plants, and military command centers.
The attack provoked a strong reaction in Iran, where authorities promised severe retaliation. Reports indicate that several high-ranking officials were killed in the strikes, including the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hossein Salami, and the chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces, Mohammad Bagheri. The attacks occurred in various cities, including Tehran, Tabriz, Ardabil, and Kermanshah.
According to military sources, Israeli forces utilized about 200 aircraft to carry out 330 strikes on 100 targets. A spokesperson for the Israeli Defense Forces noted that the first phase of the operation involved the destruction of Iranian air defense systems, allowing Israeli aircraft to operate with reduced risks.
In response to the attacks, Iran launched approximately 100 drones towards Israel. However, Israeli forces reported that they were able to intercept most of the unmanned aerial vehicles.
International Community's Reaction
The Kremlin sharply condemned the escalation of the conflict, stating that Russia is concerned about the situation and will prepare a statement for the UN. This highlights the growing tensions in the region, where a war in Gaza and a conflict with Hamas, backed by Iran, are already ongoing.
Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump warned that if negotiations regarding the nuclear program fail, Iran may face new strikes.
At the same time, regional countries, including Jordan, reported intercepting Iranian missiles and drones that potentially threaten their territory.
This situation creates serious risks for stability in the region, as a possible expansion of the conflict could engulf neighboring countries such as Iraq and Kuwait.
