Trump and E. Jean Carroll Court Case

Donald Trump suffered a defeat in his latest legal attempt to challenge the ruling requiring him to pay $5 million to E. Jean Carroll, a New York writer who was found by a jury to be a victim of sexual assault by the current U.S. president in the 1990s.

On Friday, June 13, 2025, the U.S. Court of Appeals in New York denied Trump’s request to review its December ruling that upheld the $5 million award to Carroll. The court was divided in its opinion: two judges appointed by Trump dissented.

Carroll, a former columnist, accused Trump of assaulting her around 1996 in a department store fitting room in Manhattan. In 2023, a civil court ruled that Trump did indeed commit sexual assault against her and then defamed her in 2022 when he denied the allegations, calling them a hoax and claiming that Carroll was "not his type."

The jury awarded Carroll, who is now 81 years old, a total of $5 million in compensatory and punitive damages. Over the past decade, more than twenty women have accused Trump of sexual assault.

Trump, who denies all allegations against him, argued that the judge in the Carroll case should not have allowed the jury to see the infamous 2005 video in which he brags about groping women, and that his alleged misconduct with two other women should not have been included in the case. The Access Hollywood video became a sensation during the final stages of the 2016 election, but did not hinder Trump’s campaign.

The president, who turns 79 on Saturday, is appealing a separate ruling requiring him to pay $83 million to Carroll for defamation and harm to her reputation when he denied her allegations in 2019. In his appeal, Trump argues that the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling to grant broad legal immunities to presidents should protect him from liability in this case.
