Steve Smith Injured in WTC Final
Steve Smith, a player for the Australian national team, will not be able to continue participating in the World Test Championship (WTC) final due to an injury. He suffered a complicated dislocated injury to his right pinky while attempting to catch the ball during the third day of the match.
The incident occurred when Smith, standing in the first slip position, tried to catch a ball that ricocheted off the bat of Temba Bavuma, the captain of the South African team. The player was positioned closer to the wicket, as previous balls had often not reached the slips, and was wearing a helmet at the time.
After failing to catch the ball, Smith fell to the ground and called for medical assistance. He was immediately transported to the hospital for further examination and treatment. An official team statement confirmed that the injury is serious but did not specify how long the player would be sidelined.
This injury jeopardizes his participation in the upcoming series of Test matches against the West Indies, which is set to begin on June 25. Australia set a target of 282 runs for South Africa, which was trying to win the final.
