Iran's Response to Israeli Attacks
On June 13, 2025, Iran's leader Ali Khamenei assured that Israel would face "severe punishment." In response to a series of Israeli airstrikes that destroyed part of Iran's military capabilities, Iran launched about 100 explosive drones towards Israel. The drones were partially launched from Iraq, which reduced their flight time.
Statements from the Iranian Foreign Minister
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in a letter to the UN Security Council, described the targeted killings of Iranian officials by Israeli forces as "clear manifestations of state terrorism." He emphasized that Iran has the right to self-defense under the UN Charter.
Araghchi noted that "this right is non-negotiable" and warned that Israel would "deeply regret" its "reckless aggression." The minister called on the Security Council to take urgent measures to hold the Israeli regime accountable for its actions.
Escalation of the Conflict
Israeli attacks on Iran have become the most significant since the war with Iraq in the 1980s. They occurred against the backdrop of rising tensions over the rapid development of Iran's nuclear program. Israel claims that these strikes were necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear bombs, although it is not definitively known how close Tehran is to achieving this goal.
