Google Closes Instant Apps Due to Low Usage

  • Google is shutting down Instant Apps in December 2025 due to low usage.
  • The feature allowed users to try mini-versions of apps without installation, but it did not gain popularity.
  • The company will focus on other tools, such as AI for user engagement.

This was reported by Ars Technica, The Verge.

Closure of Instant Apps

Google has announced plans to close the Instant Apps feature in December 2025. This decision comes as a result of low usage of this feature among users.

Instant Apps were introduced in 2017 and allowed developers to create mini-versions of Android apps that could be loaded without installation. Users could try apps and demo games simply by clicking on a link.

The latest news about the closure of the feature became known when developer Leon Omelyan discovered a message about the change in Android Studio. The message indicated that support for Instant Apps would be discontinued, and all Google Play Instant APIs would no longer function.

A Google representative confirmed that Instant Apps are not popular, and the company plans to focus on other tools for user engagement, such as AI-driven app highlighting and simultaneous app installations.

While the Instant Apps feature was useful for certain types of applications, its adoption proved insufficient to ensure widespread use. Many developers opted for other means to attract audiences, while users increasingly preferred full-fledged applications.
