Captain Temba Bavuma, who suffered a left thigh injury, and century-maker Aiden Markram combined their efforts to create an unbroken partnership of 143 runs. Bavuma ended the day with 65 runs, while Markram scored 102, marking the highest individual achievement in the final.
After the lunch break, South Africa began their path to victory, competing against some of Australia's best bowling attacks, which included four of the top ten Test bowlers. However, the Australians were unable to disrupt the calm of the South African pair.
After the first two days, which saw 14 players dismissed, the third day proved more favorable for the batters. At the start of the second innings, South Africa aimed to surpass the highest successful run chase in England's history, which stands at 282 runs, set in 2004.
