Call for change from award winners

Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction winner Rachel Clarke has reached out to Health Secretary Wes Streeting, urging changes in the UK medical system. She noted that young doctors are facing unemployment due to a lack of specialty training positions, despite the need for qualified medical professionals in the National Health Service (NHS).

This summer, over 20,000 doctors may not secure a place for specialty training, caused by an excess of applications for a limited number of vacancies. Clarke, who works in palliative care, emphasized that this leads to unemployment among doctors who cannot find jobs in the NHS.

In her acceptance speech, Clarke stated that the current state of medicine is critical. She urged Streeting not to leave doctors without jobs and stressed the need for investment in a medical system that requires urgent reforms.

At the same time, Yael van der Wouden, the author of the debut novel "The Safekeep," received the award for fiction for her book that explores themes of identity and trauma. She expressed her outrage over the hatred towards the LGBTQ+ community and highlighted the importance of acceptance and love in society.

Van der Wouden noted that her novel, set in the Netherlands in 1961, is not only a love story but also an exploration of personal identity and historical memory. She believes that society should strive for greater empathy and understanding instead of expressing hatred.

Both authors called for active actions in the medical and social sectors, emphasizing that changes are necessary to improve the living and working conditions not only for doctors but for all individuals.
