During the first practice of the Canadian Grand Prix, Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc crashed, while Max Verstappen from Red Bull set the fastest time. Leclerc lost control at a corner, locking up his wheels and hitting the barrier, which resulted in damage to his car.
Leclerc attempted to shortcut through the grass but lost control and hit the wall, finishing the session in 10th place. He apologized to the team over the radio, saying, "I locked up and should have gone straight."
Verstappen proved to be quicker than Alexander Albon from Williams and Carlos Sainz. The four-time champion was 0.039 seconds faster than Albon and 0.082 seconds faster than Sainz.
George Russell from Mercedes finished fourth, ahead of Lewis Hamilton from Ferrari, Isaac Hajar from Racing Bulls, and Lando Norris from McLaren. On a track that proved slippery and dirty, the McLaren team struggled: Norris finished 12th, while his teammate Oscar Piastri was 14th, testing a new front wing and suspension.
Red Bull driver Yuki Tsunoda finished 11th, while Fernando Alonso from Aston Martin was 12th. Leclerc, Hajar, and Liam Lawson from Racing Bulls completed the top 10.
