Rejection of the Proposal for Assistance to Ukraine

The House Appropriations Committee has approved its version of the defense budget for the 2026 fiscal year but rejected the Democrats' proposal to allocate $300 million in military assistance to Ukraine.

This information was reported by Breaking Defense.

During the meeting, Democratic Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur presented an amendment for additional assistance to Ukraine, but the majority of committee members did not support this initiative.

Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole explained that adopting the amendment could jeopardize the passage of the entire defense budget. He noted that he has always supported Ukraine.

"I authored the largest aid package, and my opinion on this matter has not changed, but politics is practical," Cole said.

Cole also added that any amendments to the budget should not divide those who support it.

Republican Chuck Edwards stated that he was willing to support the amendment along with the Democrats.

The committee ultimately approved the defense budget for 2026 totaling $832 billion. The bill will now move to a vote in both chambers of the U.S. Congress.

Earlier, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth informed Congress that the current administration intends to reduce military assistance to Ukraine.
