A new study published in the journal JAMA Network Open indicates that the number of walks taken daily is more important than walking speed in reducing the risk of chronic lower back pain. Researchers from Norway analyzed data from over 11,000 participants who took part in the Trøndelag health study from 2017 to 2019.

According to the results, walks lasting more than 100 minutes a day reduce the risk of chronic back pain by 23% compared to those who walk less than 78 minutes. Specifically, walks lasting 125 minutes or more reduce the risk by 24%.

Participants who walked more also tended to be more physically active overall. This study confirms previous findings that activity can be beneficial in reducing the risk of back pain.

The research shows that simple lifestyle changes, such as regular walks, can significantly reduce the risk of developing back pain. It is estimated that by 2050, the number of people with chronic back pain will rise to 843 million.

Since back pain is a leading cause of disability, it is important to find accessible ways to prevent it. According to one of the study's authors, increasing the number of walks can be a simple and cost-effective way to alleviate the burden on the healthcare system.

Experts recommend starting with short walks and gradually increasing their duration. This can be achieved by integrating walking into daily life, such as walking instead of taking the elevator or planning walks with friends.
