Control of 23andMe

Anne Wojcicki, co-founder and former CEO of 23andMe, plans to buy the company back after it filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11. On June 13, 2025, 23andMe and TTAM Research Institute, a nonprofit organization led by Wojcicki, announced a deal to purchase "a significant portion of the company's assets" for $305 million.

Previously, in May, the biotechnology company Regeneron Pharmaceuticals acquired 23andMe for $256 million in a bankruptcy auction. However, the new agreement with TTAM resulted from a rebidding process that took place between TTAM and Regeneron, as stated in a press release.

23andMe is known for its at-home DNA testing kits, but the company has struggled to become profitable and faced a massive data breach in 2023, leading to a $30 million settlement to resolve a lawsuit.

TTAM will adhere to "23andMe's privacy policy" and is committed to implementing additional consumer protection measures, including the establishment of a consumer privacy advisory board within 90 days after the deal closes. The agreement is still subject to court approval but is expected to close "in the coming weeks."

The bankruptcy judge agreed to reopen bidding on the condition that Regeneron surpasses Wojcicki's offer by at least $10 million. Regeneron declined, leaving control of 23andMe with TTAM if the court approves the deal.

23andMe possesses valuable genetic data that can be used to identify potential health risks and to pinpoint targets for drug development.
