Call from the President of Mexico
On Friday, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, called on U.S. authorities not to conduct immigration raids that could affect attendees of the Gold Cup football match between the national teams of Mexico and the Dominican Republic, which will be held in Los Angeles.
Recent Events
Recently, dozens of people were detained in Los Angeles, including in trendy areas and at Home Depot parking lots. More than 100 individuals have been in the hands of immigration authorities.
Sheinbaum expressed hope that there would be no raids during the match. "We do not believe that any actions will be taken during the football match," she said at a press conference.
The Match and Security Measures
The match between Mexico and the Dominican Republic is scheduled for Saturday evening at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. These matches typically attract thousands of fans; the last game of the Mexican team in this region gathered over 50,000 spectators.
In light of protests that arose after the raids, the Mexican national team decided to change hotels, moving from downtown to Long Beach.
Support for Citizens
Claudia Sheinbaum also announced a campaign being conducted by Mexican consulates in the U.S. to provide information to Mexicans in case of their unfair detention by immigration authorities. "This campaign will provide all necessary information on what to do in case of detention and maintain constant contact with families," she added.
