Afghan Man Pleads Guilty to Terror Plot in the U.S. During Elections

Afghan Man Pleads Guilty to Terror Plot
An Afghan man living in Oklahoma has pleaded guilty to attempting to organize a terrorist attack in the U.S. on Election Day in support of the terrorist group ISIS. On Friday, June 13, 2025, Nasir Ahmad Tawhidi, 27, pleaded guilty to two felonies: conspiracy and providing support to ISIS, as well as attempting to acquire firearms to carry out the terrorist act.
Tawhidi faces up to 35 years in prison. According to FBI Director Kasha Patel, the defendant admitted to planning and acquiring firearms to carry out a terrorist attack on Election Day in 2024. Tawhidi's plans were discovered and thwarted thanks to the efforts of the FBI.
Details of the Case
Tawhidi was living in Oklahoma City when he purchased two AK-47 rifles and 500 rounds of ammunition to target large gatherings of people. According to court documents, he conspired with several individuals, including his brother-in-law, Abdulla Khaji Zada, over several months.
Zada, who was 17 at the time of the crime, was also charged as an adult and pleaded guilty in April. He faces up to 15 years in prison.
Tawhidi arrived in the U.S. in September 2021 on a special immigration visa after the Taliban took over Kabul. At the time of his arrest on October 7, Tawhidi was on probation as his immigration status was under review. After his arrest, his probation was revoked.
According to FBI agents, Tawhidi, who worked as a rideshare driver and in auto repair shops, was under surveillance for more than a month before his arrest.
