Court's Ban on New York Mayor's Plan
The New York court has prohibited the city's mayor, Eric Adams, from allowing federal immigration services to open an office in the city's main prison. This occurred due to concerns that the mayor invited them back as part of a deal with the Trump administration to resolve his corruption case.
The ruling by Judge Mary Rosado, issued on Friday, was a setback for the Democratic mayor. Adams had issued an executive order allowing the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal agencies to occupy office space in the Rikers Island prison.
City lawmakers filed a lawsuit in April, accusing Adams of a corruption deal with the Trump administration in exchange for dropping criminal charges against him.
Rosado temporarily blocked the executive order in April. In her ruling, she noted that city council members demonstrated a likelihood of success in proving at least the appearance of a corruption deal when the mayor publicly agreed to bring ICE back to Rikers in exchange for dismissing criminal charges.
The judge also highlighted comments from Thomas Homan, head of U.S. Border Services, who stated in February that if Adams did not fulfill the deal, "I will be in his office asking where the deal we agreed upon is."
Adams has repeatedly denied entering into a deal with the administration regarding the criminal case. He claims he delegated his first deputy, Randy Mastro, to make decisions about bringing ICE back to Rikers to avoid a conflict of interest.
However, Rosado pointed out that Mastro reports to Adams and "cannot be considered impartial."
In a prepared statement, Mastro noted that the administration is confident in the success of the case. He emphasized that the executive order pertains to the criminal prosecution of violent transnational gangs committing crimes in the city.
City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, who is running in the Democratic primary for mayor, called the court's decision a victory for public safety. She stressed that New Yorkers rely on the city to protect their civil rights.
