FIA Appoints New Steward for Canadian Grand Prix
- The FIA has appointed a new steward following the suspension of Derek Warwick for unacceptable comments.
- Enrique Bernoldi will serve as the steward from Geneva during the Canadian Grand Prix.
- This is already the second case of disciplinary action against a steward in 2023 due to conflicts of interest.
This was reported by Associated Press, BBC.
The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) has appointed a new steward for the Canadian Grand Prix after the previous steward, Derek Warwick, was suspended for unauthorized comments regarding Max Verstappen's penalty.
Warwick, a former Formula 1 driver, made comments on a gambling site where he supported the decision to penalize Verstappen for an incident with George Russell at the Spanish Grand Prix. The FIA stated that his comments were unacceptable for a steward, and he apologized for them.
He has been replaced by Brazilian Enrique Bernoldi, who will perform his duties from a remote operations center in Geneva throughout the weekend. Derek Warwick will return to his duties at the next Grand Prix in Austria.
This is the second instance this year in which the FIA has held a steward accountable. Previously, Johnny Herbert was dismissed due to a conflict of interest related to his media comments.
The controversial rule changes implemented by the FIA have also sparked outrage, as critics believe they jeopardize the reputation of the organization under the leadership of President Mohammed Ben Sulayem. The issue of steward independence in decision-making remains open, as the FIA refuses to comment on their decisions.
