Launching an Experiment to Protect Against Russian Drones

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has launched an experimental program to engage volunteers in counter-drone operations. The initiative aims to strengthen measures against the Shahed drones, which Russia regularly uses to attack Ukrainian targets.

During almost every large-scale attack, Russia launches an increasing number of drones. For example, on the night of May 25, Ukrainians faced an attack of 250 Shahed drones. During the attack on June 1, there were 472, and on June 9 — 479.

According to military experts, Russia produces about 2,700 Shahed drones each month. To counter these drones, mobile fire groups have been created, utilizing various systems, including interceptor drones, electronic warfare systems, and air defense means.

However, experts note that interceptor drones have several limitations, including their maximum speed and range. Additionally, operators are needed to manage these drones, complicating their use.

Alternatives and New Approaches

Experts also emphasize that civilian aviation can become an effective tool in the fight against Shahed drones. The Ministry of Defense has already made a decision to involve private aircraft to enhance air defense.

Overall, the experiment to engage volunteers in air defense could be an important step, but to implement this project, it is necessary to prepare the volunteers and provide them with everything needed to carry out their tasks.
