Military Parade in Washington
Washington (AP) — A massive military parade that President Donald Trump has long desired will take place Saturday evening, starting from the Lincoln Memorial, featuring tanks, orchestras, and thousands of troops.
This parade, coinciding with Trump’s 79th birthday, was added to the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army, which had been planned in advance. It has drawn criticism for its cost of up to $45 million and the potential damage to city streets from the tanks. The Army has taken measures to protect the streets, including laying down metal plates.
The day of the U.S. Army demonstration comes amidst Trump’s willingness to utilize the armed forces for actions that other U.S. presidents have traditionally avoided. Recently, he activated the California National Guard and Marines to ensure safety during protests in Los Angeles, which sparked controversy.
Trump also spoke at Fort Bragg, where members of the 82nd Airborne Division expressed dissatisfaction during his speech. This raised concerns among military leaders and members of Congress regarding the political activity of the military.
Trump has dismissed concerns over the cost of the parade, the weather forecast, and protests. "I think it will be a great day!!!" he wrote on his social media platform.
Alongside the parade, protests labeled “No Kings” are planned in many cities across the U.S., although no security threats have been identified in Washington.
About 60% of Americans believe the parade is "not a worthwhile expenditure" of public funds. The parade will begin at 6:30 PM Eastern Time, featuring 6,169 soldiers and 128 tanks, along with 62 aircraft flying overhead.
The festival accompanying the parade will kick off at 9:30 AM with fitness competitions, demonstrations, and music. At the end of the parade, Trump will swear in 250 new or re-enlisted soldiers, and the Golden Knights parachute team will jump onto the National Mall.
Concerns Regarding the Parade
The parade raises concerns among Washington city officials due to the potential damage to roads not designed for heavy equipment. During the event, some roads will be closed for up to four days, and flights from Ronald Reagan Airport will also be temporarily suspended.
While Trump denies that the parade is connected to his birthday, he notes that it coincides with Flag Day. Meanwhile, critics argue that this is merely a way to boost his popularity among supporters.
