Emma Raducanu Withdraws from Tournament Due to Back Problems

Emma Raducanu will not participate in the Berlin Open tennis tournament next week due to back issues. The 22-year-old athlete has been experiencing discomfort since the Strasbourg competition last month, prior to the French Open. During her quarterfinal match against Zheng Qinwen at the Queens Club tournament, she even took a medical timeout.

Raducanu stated, "This has been going on for a few weeks, and I have had back problems before. I feel like this is just my vulnerability. I know I need to take good care of it. I'm not too worried that it’s something serious, but it is quite annoying and needs proper management."

Initially, Raducanu decided to participate in the Berlin tournament instead of Nottingham after receiving a wildcard for the WTA 500, where nine of the top ten female tennis players in the world will compete. However, she has now chosen to focus on recovery to be in top shape for Wimbledon.

As a result of this decision, Raducanu will miss the chance to be seeded at her home Grand Prix, but she is confident that she will be able to compete in the Lexus Eastbourne tournament a week before Wimbledon. Last year, Raducanu achieved her first career victory over a top-10 player, defeating Jessica Pegula in southern England, and subsequently reached the fourth round at Wimbledon.
