Framework Desktop Review Demonstrates Compactness and Limited Capabilities
- Compact desktop PC with limited modular capabilities
- Productivity suited for everyday tasks and light gaming
- Constructed from inexpensive materials, which reduces overall impression
This is reported by Ars Technica, The Verge.
Framework Desktop is a new product from Framework, which gained popularity thanks to its modular, upgradable, and repairable laptops. However, the first desktop computer from the company turned out to be less modular than traditional models.
This desktop PC has a compact size, similar to a stack of notebooks on a table. The case is made of black and silver plastic, which gives it a stylish appearance, but at the same time reflects the use of cheaper materials. It accommodates a mini-ITX format motherboard, a cooler, and a power supply unit, as well as modular front ports and a customizable panel with 21 plastic plates.
The base configuration uses the Ryzen AI Max 385 processor with 8 CPU cores and 32 graphics cores, while the more powerful Max Plus 395 model has 16 CPU cores and 40 graphics cores. Despite the limited modularity, the Framework Desktop promotes significant productivity for gaming and creative tasks, capable of working with large language models.
The computer is easy to assemble, requiring no thermal paste, and the instructions clearly describe the process. However, it is important to note that all essential components, such as CPU, graphics, and operational memory, are integrated and not upgradable, which could be a significant drawback for enthusiasts.
Framework Desktop positions itself as a simple yet sufficiently powerful computer for everyday tasks, but less advantageous compared to traditional desktops that can offer greater productivity for the same price.
